Problems installing SQL 2005 Express after trying VS.NET 2005 Beta 2

Hi Everyone,
I recently installed Visual Studio .NET 2005 Beta 2 which included SQL 2005 Community Technology Preview. After installing it all, I was no longer able to connect to my SQL 2000 instance in Enterprise Manager. The application opened ok but whenever I tried to browse the server or register it again, it was giving me an error relating to named pipes which really confused me since I was trying to connect to a SQL 2000 database through the SQL 2000 application. I was able to use the 2005 equivalent application (the name eludes me right now) to connect to the \SQLEXPRESS instance. All this time I could still connect to the default instance through Query Analyser and my .NET Web Applications that used SQL databases.
I later had to uninstall the betas because I needed a newer version of the .NET Framework to work with DotNetNuke 4.0. (A whole other story there...)
After uninstalling everything relating to the betas (which I had to do carefully in a prescribed order) I found that I couldn't even open Enterprise Manager properly. It had a big error message in the main display window. I discovered from a forum somewhere that I had to re-register a dll file to fix it. I did this and everything was back to normal.
(pause for breath)
OK, so then I downloaded Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition and installed it. Everything was great until the end of the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition setup when I was told it had failed to install. I haven't looked through ALL the log files but in the summary log file, the following message is reported for all three errors:
"[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory Provider: No process is on the other end of the pipe."
I am running Windows XP, SP2 with everything up to date in Windows Update. The Beta 2 of VS.NET was the only beta software I've installed. I'm not trying to connect to a different machine or anything either. VS and SQL are both on the same machine. The only other thing that may be relevant is that the SQL 2000 I have is an evaulation version. I don't think that affects it but you never know. It's often the most overlooked variable that trips you.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to remedy this?
Thanks for taking the time to read about my problem :)

i had the last ctp installed cleaned up the instalation and now when i try to install i get an error message:

SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory Provider: No process is on the other end of the pipe

Can you reply with the error code you're getting. Also, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove SQL Server Native Client and rerun setup and see if that works.

That's exactly what's happening to me. I'm afraid I don't have a solution but you're the first person I've found who's got the same experience as me. I had Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 including the SQL CTP and after I uninstalled it all I downloaded Visual Web Developer which included the SQL 2005 Express. I got the same error about no process on the other end of the pipe. (My post on the subject.)
Hopefully one of us will get a reply!|||

|||Update:

I solved the problem by backing up my data and re-installing windows. I now have Visual Web Developer and SQL 2005 Express running alongside Visual Studio 2003 Enterprise Developer, MSDE and SQL 2000.

I don't know if there was a simpler solution but I had spent too much time on it already. Hurrah for my new Maxtor OneTouch II external 300GB beast that carried the burden of my data during these difficult hours!|||

Well, I can add myself to your group of installation problems with the same error mesage!!!

Problems inserting decimal numbers

Hi,
I'm having trouble inserting a decimal numbre in SQL
Server. I have an app built on .Net.
I'm passsing the number "98.5" to a store procedure and
SQL Server is saving the number but like this 985.00.
What seems to be the problem?
The regional settings of the computer at first where:
decimal separator ","
List separator "."
group separator "."
I have changed them to
decimal separator "."
List separator ","
group separator ","
But is looks like its not working....
Please help....Manrique,
we know that SQL Server does not do that, so the answer is to find where the
values gets changed: is it changed by the application? Is it changed within
the stored procedure? I think that's what you need look at. Have the
stored proc return the value of the variable at various stages of the stored
proc, I believe you would see a "whoops" somewhere.

Problems grasping ado.net - coming from asp background

Hi, i've downloaded a membership and roles provider but i am very new to ado.net. I have come fromasp background. Here's mycode:

public override void AddUsersToRoles(string[] usernames, string[] rolenames) {
// Validate arguments
foreach (string rolename in rolenames) if (!this.RoleExists(rolename)) throw new ProviderException("Role name not found");
foreach (string username in usernames) {
if (username.IndexOf(',') > 0) throw new ArgumentException("User names cannot contain commas.");
foreach (string rolename in rolenames) {
if (IsUserInRole(username, rolename)) throw new ProviderException("User is already in role.");
}
}

SqlConnection db = this.OpenDatabase();
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO UsersInRoles (UserName, RoleName) VALUES (@.UserName, @.RoleName)", db);
cmd.Parameters.Add("@.UserName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 100);
cmd.Parameters.Add("@.RoleName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 100);
SqlTransaction tran = null;

try {
tran = db.BeginTransaction();
cmd.Transaction = tran;
foreach (string username in usernames) {
foreach (string rolename in rolenames) {
cmd.Parameters["@.UserName"].Value = username;
cmd.Parameters["@.RoleName"].Value = rolename;
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
}
}
tran.Commit();
}
catch {
tran.Rollback();
throw;
}
finally {
db.Close();
}
}

private SqlConnection OpenDatabase() {
SqlConnection DB = new SqlConnection(this.connectionString);
DB.Open();
return DB;
}

The problem i have is that the table structure they provide is to have:

UsersInRoles
- UserName (foreign key to users table)
- RoleName (foreign key to roles table)

but the table structure i have is:

UsersInRoles
- UserID (foreign key to users table)
- RoleID (foreign key to roles table)

So what i need to do is lookup the UserID and RoleID from the appropriate tables based on the UserName and RoleName before doing the insert. However i am not familiar with the new syntax. I'm sure i could bodge something together but i assume this new syntax is something to do with running all the insert statements in one (transaction) so it doesn't have to keep taking round trips back to sqlserver.

Appreciate if someone could show me how this could be done. Thanks

If I understand you correctly, this issue does not differ from ASP to ASP.NET. You need to get UserName(RoleName) based on UserID(RoleID) and then insert the values into UsersInRoles table, right? If so, you can create a stored procedure like this:

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_InsUsersInRoles @.RoleID INT
AS
INSERT INTO UsersInRoles (UserName, RoleName)
SELECT UserName, RoleName
FROM Users join Roles ON Users.RoleID=Roles.RoleID
WHERERoles.RoleID=@.RoleID

Then you can easily call the stored procedure, just remember to set the SqlCommand.CommandType to StoredProcedure, and add parameter for it.

|||

Change:

SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO UsersInRoles (UserName, RoleName) VALUES (@.UserName, @.RoleName)", db);

to:

SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO UsersInRoles (UserID, RoleID)SELECT (SELECT UserIDFROM UsersWHERE Username=@.UserName),RoleIDFROM RolesWHERE RoleName=@.RoleName", db);
|||

Hi Motley worked a treat. However i also tried doing:

SqlConnection db = this.OpenDatabase();
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO UserRoles (UserName, RoleName) VALUES (@.UserId, @.RoleId)", db);
cmd.Parameters.Add("@.UserId", SqlDbType.Int);
cmd.Parameters.Add("@.RoleId", SqlDbType.Int);
SqlTransaction tran = null;

try {
tran = db.BeginTransaction();
cmd.Transaction = tran;
foreach (string userName in userNames) {
SqlCommand cmd2 = new SqlCommand("SELECT UserId FROM Users WHERE UserName = @.UserName", db);
cmd2.Parameters.Add("@.UserName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 100).Value = userName;
int userId = (int)cmd2.ExecuteScalar();

foreach (string roleName in roleNames) {
SqlCommand cmd3 = new SqlCommand("SELECT RoleId FROM Roles WHERE RoleName = @.RoleName", db);
cmd3.Parameters.Add("@.RoleName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 100).Value = roleName;
int roleId = (int)cmd3.ExecuteScalar();

cmd.Parameters["@.UserId"].Value = userId;
cmd.Parameters["@.RoleId"].Value = roleId;
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
}
}
tran.Commit();
}
catch {
tran.Rollback();
throw;
}
finally {
db.Close();
}

but it didn't work.

Any ideas what i did wrong. Cheers

Is RoleName unique within Roles? If you are using the default asp.net membership database structure, then it is not. RoleName is only unique within an Application, and hence may appear in Roles multiple times for different applications. If you have multiple application support, then you will need to supply the application name or application id to your roleid lookup.

My code in this case will add the user to the RoleName of all applications in which the role appears. The same problem is true for UserName as well if you are using multiple applications, but my code will fail in that case as well.

Otherwise I see nothing wrong with your code.

|||

On the other hand, it could be transaction related. I don't normally use the transaction support in ASP.NET. I prefer to use SQL transactions for all my work since I tend to create large batches within my SQL, and wrap that rather than wrapping many SqlCommands. In any case, you might try adding the cmd2 and cmd3 to the transaction as well.

It would also help if you posted what error you are getting rather than just "It didn't work".

Hi, i can't see how to track the error, i'm using visual studio web developer edition. I tried using the built in asp.net config tool to manage my users but when i put a break point in my code it does nothing. However to test if it was reaching this part of the code i did a dummy insert statement and it worked.

I also tried putting an exception on the catch part and doing console.writeline(ex.Message) but that didn't do anything either.

Appreciate your help once more. Thanks

Problems getting to the uninstall tool for SQl Server

Problems exporting reports to Excel

Hello all

I have a problem with an aplication that developed in .Net to view Crystal 9.0 reports, in my dev PC I can export any report to Excel without a problem, but on my client Pc's, click directly on the Export button, the app show the file location window, select Excel file on type file field and click ok, appear an error, it is in spanish but it is the translation ...

"Error in file c:\pathfile\filename.rpt:
Exportation DLL or format file invalid"

Then appear a new message box:

"Unable to export"

Checking on the web I found tow possible solutions, download the last Hot Fix from seagate site or check and replace the U2F*.dll files located in my user's PC Crystal folder. I tried with both but I'm where I started...

Any idea ?

ThanxDid you have latest service pack of CR?

Problems during the deployment of a report

Hello,
I just made a fresh install of Win2003 with VS.NET and SQL server 2000 with
reporting services. When I started to do some test projects to see if
everything was working again and to see what the reporting services where I
ran into some problems:
- first I started a new reporting project and after setting up a test report
I tried to build the project what worked, but when it came to the stage of
deploying it during the build process it came with the error: " The
permissions granted to user 'MYDOMAIN\IUSR_MYDOMAIN' are insufficient for
performing this operation.". After searching the Internet I didn't found a
sollution, so I tried the following:
- I started a new web application (as allways) placed a button and textbox
on it and ran it. It didn't work, it came with the following error "Error:
Project Is Not Configured To Be Debugged". Looking in IIS admin I found out
that there was only a virtual directory but no application made for it
(properties "create" application). After doing this the web app worked.
So it looks like VS.NET 2003 doesn't have enhough rights to work properly
(because the reportingservices are still not working)? How can I fix this?
BTW:
- When I click within VS.NET on the internalt browser tab it display's mine
reports properly, I can browse through multiple pages, save my report to pdf.
- I posted this already to the dotnet.general newsgroup, and they told me to
post the question on this forum.
Thanks,
Charl1. I am getting the same error "The permissions granted to user
'MYDOMAIN\IUSR_MYDOMAIN' are insufficient for
performing this operation." I thought it was because we installed a
certifercate and applied SSL.
2. How do I use SSL in Interdev with Report Services?

This issue can occur if the virutal folders of IIS for reporting service
allow anonymouse.
Please check the following settings:
Right click Reports /ReportServer in IIS->Properties->Directory Security
Make sure "Intergrated Windows authentication" is checked and "enable
anonymouse access" is unchecked.
For SSL setting, please refer to

Hope this helps.

This solved mine problem!
So what you are saying is that it isn't possible to use the reportingservice
with anonymouse access enabled? Because that is what I would like to do for
my reports?!?
Thanks,

If you want to anonymouse to be able to run report properly, usually you
shall grant proper permission to ASP.net and USR_machinename accout.
- Chang the anonymous account to use IUSR_machinename
- Add aspnet/IUSR_machinename as a RM account and assigned browse, View
reports and View folder.
Usually you can check "enable anonymous access" in Reports virtual
directory but you shall not check it in ReportServer folder.
If the issue persists, try to add aspnet to the Admins group. Hope this
helps.

I'm a novice at this and really need some help. What stupid newbie mistake am I making here? Thanks in advance for any guidance/assistance rendered.

When you deplyed the app you left the same SQL trusted connection, and most probably there is no local SQL server running in the same machine. Make sure to change the SQL string to the IP, username and password of the database and will work really well

Al

|||

I remember I got this problem too when I did my first try. It seems that your are using trusted connection, you need assign the domain user in your database with appropriate access right. Or you can create a database user in the database to use standard User/password connection method in your database is in mixed mode..

You can easily find the syntax for the connection string. As to create user in database, you need to create a login account under Security on the Server, in the database, you assign this user for access under database security tab.

Problems connectiong to a remote DB

Hello

I developed a vb.net win app which interacts with a sqlserver 2005 express DB.

When the DB is located in my local computer everything works just fine.

I'm trying to connect to a remote DB (mdf file that located on a remote server) but without any success.

I assume that a connectionstring change is needed, however I can't find what change to perform (I tried to insert the server IP address to the connectionstring but it didn't work either).

the app connectionstring looks like that:

connectionString

="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\DBName.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=False" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

Hope someone can help me find the solution.

Since your question concerns a Windows Forms application, and not ASP.NET, you should ask it on theMSDN Forums.|||Try looking atwww.connectionstrings.com...|||Hi yarit, post the connection failure error message would help to solve the issue. You can also take a look at this post:

Hello

Firstly thanks for all of your replies.

Now, I've succeeded to connect my app to a remote DBbut only in my company's network, the DB is located on a different machine in the company's network and I can connect to it using this connection string:

connectionString

="Data Source=Inner network IP address \ SQLEXPRESS;Database=DBName;Uid=xxx;Pwd=yyy;"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient">

However I have no success connecting it to an outerIP address, although the machine is connected to the internet via a router and has an outerIP address.

I'll justindicate that my GUI is supposed to be accessed via the internet (a web app) so I must be able to connecteventually via an outer IP address.

Does anybody know if I need to change some config or if it is a pure network problem.

|||Hi yairt, first of all you have to make sure on teh SQL box no firewall is blocking TCP/IP communication to the SQL Express service from Internet. You can use telnet to check this, please refer to the post I mentioned in my previous post.|||

hi Iori jay

thanks for your reply.

The problem was solved (or better said was by-passed), apparently it has nothing to do with SQLSERVER or connection strings.

We connected the server to the internet via ADSL line (`and not through a router that probably concealed its address) and everything worked just fine.

Problems connecting with VS.NET Server Explorer

I have SQL Server SPK3 and Visual Studio.NET running on the same machine.
When I try to connect to my SQL Server from the VS.NET Server Explorer I can
expand the server and look at the SQL Server instance on my computer but when
I try to expand the instance, I get a login dialog entitled "SQL Server
Login" which asks for Login and Password. When I put in what I think the
Login and Password should be, it tells me, "The specified procedure could not
be found". If I check the option that says, "Use Windows NT Integrated
Security" it tells me "The specified procedure could not be found". I need
some assistance from some gurus. What's going on here?!!
I cannot help you but have a similar problem. I can add servers, but never
connect and see details. Worse yet, I cannot create a connection. I go
through the dialog and click test connection and get connection "test
connection succeeded" message. When I try to finish the task I get a message
twice saying "Unable to connect to database. The connection failed. Check
your username and password, and try again." Using either Enterprise Manager
or Query Analyzer, I can connect to the server and databases and see whatever
I need to.
I have Visual Studio 2003, I am trying to connect to both a MSDE SP3 (same
machine) and SQL Enterprise SP3 (different machine).
I am not sure when exactly this occurred as in the past I had created some
connections. I noticed it within the last couple weeks as I have gotten back
into .Net for my current project. I cannot use the old connections and once
deleted cannot recreate them as above.

Problems connecting to SQL 2005 DB on server

Hi - I've been posting this in the aso.net forums, but I seem to have
stalled in there.
I have SQL Server Express 2005, and .net running on a windows 2000
server, remote server on my network. SQL Express and IIS/the web
application need to run on the same box.
I can get these to run locally through the internal webserver in
VS2005/Express, but when I deploy them to the remote server - I can't
connect to the database file - which is on exactly the same box. I
either get the cannot attach database, as it already exists, login for
user fails, or connected but no instance on the other end type errors
(please see http://forums.asp.net/1215828/ShowPost.aspx for my posts).
What I would ideally like is guidance on:
If I uninstall SQL Express 2005, and do a clean install, with mixed mode
authentication, is there a step by step guide anywhere which will advise
how to:
a) setup a new user from within SSME
b) whether to attach the database file or not
c) which section of SSME to change to allow the user to connect to the
local (database is on the same remote server as IIS) database - whether
in Security/Logins or Database/Properties
d) advise a connection string which would work given the above steps#
Thanks for any help here - I'm not a DBA, and don't have access to one.
Thanks, Mark

Problems Connect a Network Drive with SQL Server Agent

Hello
I have MS SQL 7.00.1094 on NT 4.0
When I connect a Network Drive (net use.../User:local User
on Remote System) with SQL Server Agent I cannot access
this.
If I take the same command on the desktop (Command Shell)
the access is o.K.
The SQL Server Agent is started with the same Account as I
logged on locally.
Even I connect a network drive z.B. U: local, I can not
access this from SQL Server Agent though is the same
global user.
But this Problem exist only 7 days ago.
Thanks
MartinDid someone add a proxy account to the SQL agent? Go to Enterprise Manger
and check the properties for SQL server agent | Job System tab. You should
verify then that you can map the drive with the proxy account.

Problems calling a stored procedures depending on parameters

Hi guys, hoping one of you may be able to help me out. I am using VS 2005, and VB.net for a Windows application.

I have a table in SQL that has a list of Storedprocedures: Sprocs Table: SPID - PK (int), ID (int), NAME (string), TYPE (string)
The ID is a Foreign key (corresponding to a Company ID), the name is the stored procedure name, and Type (is the type of SP).

On my application I need to a certain SP depending on the company selected and what page you are on. I have a seperate SP that passes in parameters for both Company, and Type and should output the Name value:

ALTERPROCEDURE [dbo].[S_SPROC]
(@.IDint,@.TYPECHAR(10),@.NAMECHAR(20) OUTPUT)
AS

SELECT @.NAME= NAME
FROM SPROCS
WHERE [ID]= @.ID
AND [TYPE]= @.TYPE

Unfortunately I dont seem to be able to get the output in .Net, or then be able to fill my dataset with the Stored Procedure.
Has anyone done something similar before, or could point me in the right direction to solving this problem.

Thanks
Phil

Since @.NAME is an output parameter, you need to indicate that in your Command object (ParameterDirection.InputOutput or ParameterDirection.Output). That allows the parameter's value to be retrieved after the command has been executed.

Alternatively, you could select the data like you would in a normal data retrieval, and not worry about using an output parameter.

|||

Thanks for your reply Mark, I will try adding the ParameterDirection part.

If I use normal data retrieval how can I select the appropriate stored procedure when I try filling my table adapter from the dataset?

Thanks

|||

I assumed you would be performing an operation to select the stored proc name, then another operation to execute that stored proc.

|||

Yes that is what I am trying to do, but not so sure on how to go about it. Do you have any code examples?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm afraid that there's something wrong in your code. What we can provide is a general process of communicating with a stored procedure from a .NET application.

Let's take the stored procedure you provided as the sample.

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[S_SPROC]
( @.ID int, @.TYPE CHAR(10), @.NAME CHAR(20) OUTPUT )
AS

SELECT @.NAME = NAME
FROM SPROCS
WHERE [ID] = @.ID
AND [TYPE] = @.TYPE

In your procs, there are 2 input parameters and an output parameter. Then in your application, you should following the steps below:

1. Create the connection which links to the database.
a) Dim myconn As New SqlConnection(ConnectionString)

2. Create the SqlCommand object which execute the procs.
Dim sc As New SqlCommand()
sc.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
sc.CommandText = "YourProcsName"
sc.Connection = myconn

3. Setting your parameters and add them to SqlCommand object.

Dim sp1 As New SqlParameter()
sp1.ParameterName = "Parameter1"
sp1.Value = ""

Dim sp2 As New SqlParameter()
sp2.ParameterName = "Parameter2"
sp2.Value = ""

Dim sp3 As New SqlParameter()
sp3.ParameterName = "Parameter3"
sp3.Size = 10
sp3.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output

sc.Parameters.Add(sp1)
sc.Parameters.Add(sp2)
sc.Parameters.Add(sp3)

4. Open the connection, execute the process, and get the output parameter.

myconn.Open()
sc.ExecuteNonQuery()
myconn.Close()
Dim c As String = sp.Value.ToString()

After all, you can get the output parameter from the variable C.

Besides, this is a WebForm support forum, if you are developing WindowForm application, it would be better for you to go to MSDN forum where you can get more help.

Thanks.

Problems backing up SQL Express Database...

Hello,

I found some code below that works fine when I run it in my vb.net code in Design mode. When I publish the application, run the app and then execute the sub MyDbBackup() I get the following error: Cannot open backup device 'C:\dbBackup'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied). BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

Here is the code that runs:

Public Sub MyDbBackup()
Dim sqlconn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection(MyConnectionStringdb)
sqlconn.Open()
Dim Backupcommand As SqlClient.SqlCommand = New SqlClient.SqlCommand("BACKUP DATABASE [" & sqlconn.Database.ToString & "] TO DISK = 'c:\myDataBaseBackup.bak'")
Backupcommand.CommandType = CommandType.Text
Backupcommand.Connection = sqlconn
Backupcommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
sqlconn.Close()
End Sub

2 Questions: Why does it backup fine in design mode, but not after it is published? Also, in design mode, my database is called TAP_Master.mdf but when I look under C:\Program Files\Microsoft\ SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data, I do not see that database name... all I see is master.mdf, model, msdbdata etc... Is that database stored anywhere else?

I have set the MyConnectionStringdb variable to = "Data Source =.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\TAP_Master.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

Thanks in advance.

You don't see your database in the Data directory because you embedded it in your application. The database is installed to the same location where you application is installed, which is an obfuscated path that is generated during ClickOnce installation. ClickOnce applications use a special type of instances of SQL Server called a User Instance to allow the database to be attached at runtime.

I'm not sure about the backup failure, I'll have to do a little more research. Is your published application on a different computer than the Dev box? I'm thinking it has something to do with a backup device that was created on the Dev box, but does not exist on the test box.

Thanks for your reply. You are correct... My published application is on a different computer than my Dev box. If you can find out any additional info as to why I'm getting that error that would be great.

Also, I'll ask this question as well, Once the bak up file is created, what would be the best method to restore the .bak file to the machine that runs the published application.? I thought I could use the following code, but I receive the message, "Restore cannot process the database C"\Visual Studio\Projects\Prog\BIN\DEBUG\TAP_Master.MDF beause it is in use by this session. It is recommended that the master database be used when performing this operation":

Public Sub MyDbBackup()
Dim sqlconn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection(MyConnectionStringdb)
sqlconn.Open()
Dim Backupcommand As SqlClient.SqlCommand = New SqlClient.SqlCommand("RESTORE DATABASE [" & sqlconn.Database.ToString & "] FROM DISK = 'c:\myDataBaseBackup.bak'")
Backupcommand.CommandType = CommandType.Text

Hi,

I guess that the user instance feature is not made for Backup and restore (with the emphasize on restore) because a restore will do a server attaching after the restoring which is not the sense of a user attached instance. Why don′t you take the MDF as a backup only ?

Hello, can you elaborate on that quote? How can I take only the MDF as a backup? Basically I want to be able to back up any saved data, and then be able to restore it in case of a system failure or a corrupted operating system.

Thanks for your replies all.

|||Just do a normal file copy when the database connection is closed, then you can easily attach it to a user instance again when the data is corrupt.

Ok. This is what I have done. I opened my published app on my laptop, and then entered in some data. I closed my app, and then attempted to copy the master.mdf file from the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data directory. At first I couldn't copy because SQL server express was still running. So I killed the services and copied the data.

I reinstalled my app, copied back the master.mdf into the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data directory, and then launched the app. Now I do not see the data that I previously entered.

Am I understanding the File Copy / Attach to user instance concept correctly?

Thanks again for all your help.

|||No actually not, the database which has to be backup is your own database not the SQL Server internal ones. YOu will have to backup the MDF file of the database with the reference TAP_master.mdf you mentioned above.

The reason you're seeing the backup error is that the user context running your app on the deployed system doesn't have Windows permissions to create a file in the root of the local C: drive. That's why it's different from your dev environment: Different machine, different permissions.

So, either point the backup to a known directory that you're guaranteed to have permission to write to on machines where you're deployed, or find a way to make sure that you have appropriate permissions to the root of C:.

On the restore, it's simply a matter that you can't overwrite a database while you have an active session attached to it. Your connection is that session. By setting focus to Master (use master) you're taking focus away from the database you're trying to restore, and it should work fine.

Ok thanks...First issue resolved... Now with regards to the second issue, Where am I setting focus to the master from? Is it within Visual Studio design mode, or under SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration?

Thanks.

The context information is session based, you can change the context from within your script (if you are using one, I am not sure from your explnation using the USE <DatabaseName> command. If you are in any GUI of SQL Management Studio, make sure that you are not residing on a database node in the treeview that you want to restore.

Problem with website and db

I am new to .NET and the Visual Web Developer Express and what not...I have created a website on my machine which works wonderfully...however, and I'm sure this is somewhere but I can't find it, I cannot get it to work on my host server...the Default page comes up, but when I try to sign in it says:

"An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file c:\hosting\webhost4life\member\harrison0801\App_Data\aspnetdb.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."

The host support tells me to change the db name from aspnetdb to something else...I do this and when I run the site again or try to log in, I get the exact same error message...then they go on to tell me that I have to remove the LocalSqlServer in the web.config file which now looks like this:

<connectionStrings>
<remove name="LocalSqlServer"/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User instance=true;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

<add name="Example" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|example.mdf;User instance=true;Initial Catalog=example;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

</connectionStrings>

Of course this isn't working either...otherwise I would off playing on my server, and not posting here. Also, when I set up all the roles, users, and what not on my machine...does this carry over to the host machine?

Desperately needing massive help here...

Not a DBA and no expert in .NET

Thank you very much in advance,

Darren

Rename the .mdf file from aspnetdb.mdf to harrison0801.mdf and change your connection string to

<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|harrison0801.mdf;User instance=true;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

Okay...renamed the ASPNETDB.MDF and changed the config connection string to the above...hit CTRL F5 to run it...and guess what magically appeared? ASPNETDB without regard to the one I just changed the name on.

Also, when I run the ASP NET Configuration utililty in the VWD...walks me through all the roles, users, etc...it loads all that info into the ASPNETDB...is there something in the default config for the DB creator that can be changed? Perhaps this is something that the ASPNET creators can work out...maybe like allow the developers to name there own DB in the process of creating websites? Would be nice...less of a headache.

Problem with valid owner

I have just downloaded the MS SQL Server Management Studio Express, and are following a tutorial on www.learnvisualstudio.net

Now I am having trouble with some owner information. The message says :

"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects"

I should mention that my WIN XP username is "Bj?rn" with the Norwegian letter "?" in the middle. I suspect it to have a problem with that letter?

Any better suggestions?

When the database does not have a valid owner, the database dialog displays the owner as the logged in user. (This issue will be fixed in SP1.)

The "no valid owner" issue usually comes up when databases are owned by SQL-authentication logins and are upgraded, detached/attached to another server, or restored from backup to another server. The SID (a large number) doesn't match any existing login on the new server, so the owner name remains whatever it was on the old server, but it is marked invalid. Explicitly setting the owner to a valid principal on the server solves the problem.

There is also a known issue when the UI tries to install the database support objects on databases where the compatibility level is set to 80 (SQL Server 2000). The installation fails and the UI incorrectly reports that the database has no valid owner. Setting compatibility level to 90 (SQL Server 2005) before installing the diagram support objects solves this problem. (This issue will also be fixed in SP1.)

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

The compatibility level was already set to 90, so that didn't solve the problem.

When I tried to set a new owner, I got this message:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

Set owner failed for Database 'MyCompany'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)

An entity of type database cannot be owned by a role, a group, an approle, or by principals mapped to certificates or asymmetric keys. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15353)

Hi,

Do you fin a solution ? I have the same problem ...

Thanks

|||Yes. I think I changed the owner to sa (server admin I think it is)
