Problems getting SQL Server 2005 Express to run on my XP Pro PC

Hello
I have installed SQL Server 2005 on my XP Pro PC but I can't get it to run.
If I go into the SQL Server Management Studio Express program in the Server
name dropdown there is nothing displayed - even if I browse. But database
should be local.
If I look in Services I don't see any SQL Server entry? The only thing
vaguely related I see in Services is SQL Server VSS Writer. And this has
started OK.
How can I troubleshoot this?

What does it say as installed programs?
Do you have the installation log files see

problems downloading Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

I everybody,

I'm trying to download Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796

However, the download never finishs.

If I try to download using a download manager it stops after 98% (the segment that stops is the first segment).
If I try to download without a download manager it stops after 1% (456Kb).

What can I do?

Is there an alternate place where I can download the file?

Thanks,

Nadav

You're in the right place - try it from another network connection, and then copy the file to the first server. I just tested it and it downloads successfully from here.

Hi Buck,

I've managed to download it from another computer

(it was also several days later, so I don't know if the problem was related to the computer or if it was temporary).

Thanks anyway,

Problems Creating Instance in SQL 2005 management studio

Hello all,

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I am having a problem creating a new NS instance using SQL 2005 management

studio.

I am using the database element in my instance and application xml files like

this,

in order to create the NS application in an existing database.

<Database>

<DatabaseName>%databasename%</DatabaseName>

<SchemaName>%schemaname%</SchemaName>

</Database>

the problem that I am having is that if I encounter an error somewhere in the

process of creating this new instance the instance name and schema name I

specified are still bound somewhere, and if I correct for the error and try to

create the instance again, I receive a new error saying that there is already

an instance with my instance name, or using the schema name.

If I try to list versions it tells me there are no instances, yet if I try to

add a new instance it tells me there is already an instance using my instance

name.

I have tried searching master database tables and views for anywhere

where it might be stored, also tried poking around most of management studio

and the registry, and just can not seem to find where it is remembering that I

had tried to create this instance before.

It is like it is partially creating the instance, running into an error, and

then not rolling back its changes somewhere.
Any help would be very much appreciated

Hi Derek -

SQLNS 2005 stores its metadata in the MSDB database. Run this script in SSMS and see if your failed instance/application are listed.

USE MSDB

GO

SELECT * FROM NS90.NSInstanceInfo

SELECT * FROM NS90.NSApplicationInfo

I did find the instance names and schema names that it had "eaten" in there. cleared them and was able to install with the instance name I wanted.

Problems creating full-text population schedule via Management Studio

I am trying to schedule an hourly incremental update of the FT catalog on an indexed query. I have tried creating the catalog and schedule on both a remote machine (my workstation) and directly on the server. I get different errors on the two machines. I have tried creating the scheduled updates during the catalog creation process as well as seperately. I am able to create the catalog and update it manually in both cases. I cannot get the schedules created. The text of the errors are as follows:

NOTE: We run on an alternate port

From my workstation during the catalog creation process:

I believe it is a problem with the Management Studio IDE, but I can't be sure. So far, I have been unable to find another way to create the schedule or jobs. If I can create the jobs and schedule them via T-SQL I will happily do so.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

JC

I would like to know how you created this job, that is having this issue. It should work fine if you created under SQLAgent node.

Programatically you can use SMO objects (Look for JobServer in BOL)or agent SPs (look for sp_add_job and other related sps in BOL) to get this done

Problems creating a stored procedure in Management Studio

Hi,

I am probably going to sound really stupid but I have recently installed SQL Server Management Studio and been trying to figure out how to create a stored procedure in it. I have created a database called 'BTL_Dictionary' and that works fine. In the Object Explorer window when I click on the database, I get the tree view of all the different options. In order to write the stored procedure , I clicked on Programmability --> Stored Procedures --> New Stored Procedure.

This opened up the template and i made the following changes to the template :

-- =============================================

SET ANSI_NULLS ON

GO

SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

GO

-- =============================================

-- Author: blah

-- Create date:

-- Description: Adds the values into the DictionaryTable

-- =============================================

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[AddDictionary]

-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here

@.DictionaryID int ,

@.DictionaryName nvarchar(50),

@.DictionaryType nvarchar(50)

AS

BEGIN

-- Insert statements for procedure here

INSERT INTO DictionaryTable

(

DictionaryID,

DictionaryName,

DictionaryType

)

VALUES

(

@.DictionaryID ,

@.DictionaryName ,

@.DictionaryType

)

END

GO

-- =============================================

I saved the stored procedure, but when I refresh the database, I cannot see the stored procedure there. I trired re-opening the query and it indicates that the procedure belongs to the 'master' database instead of the 'BTL_Dictionary' database (its prefixed 'master.AddDictionary' instead of ''BTL_Dictionary.AddDictionary')

Can anyone tell me whats is is that I am doing wrong and how I can get rid of this .

Thanks

When you click "New Stored Procedure" MS will open a new query window with the PROC template in it. Just check that the database context is set to your database and not the master database. Or add a "USE" statement before the first statement in the template to ensure that the context is correct.

|||Thanks a lot for , that resolved the problem.

problems connecting to sql express 2005 server, where mdf file go?

Hello, I have correctly installed sql express 2005 onto my company server. I can connect to the sql express 2005 fine within sql management studio express. I can also connect to it the within visual studio 2005 server explorer. I have my database (MDF) on our server. I am trying to run my application within my client computer. I have changed the connection string property to connect to the server:

"Data Source=CTS\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=UpdateAttributes;Integrated Security=True"

My program will only work if there is a local copy of MDF database located within my application directory. If I remove the local copy, it errors "No process is on the other end of the pipe" Is it possible to have my application without the local copy of the MDF? I thought the idea is to have the MDF on the server. Then my app would not have the MDF copy!?Fixed the problem. Went to the server, changed the sql server 2005 surface area configuration under remote connections from using TCP/IP to TCP/IP and named pipes.

Problems connecting to server using Management Studio

Hi all,
I got this problem which makes me struggle in the last few days.
I am able to connect to my local server using a query analyzer or calling sql commands in a window application, but there's no way I can access it in Management Studio: by clicking "Connect" it just waits forever, and it doesn't respond to any other command (it must be shut by terminating the process)
Got any hints?

Thanks

Mauro

Try restarting the sql services may be your server is in hunged state......but i am not sure if that would solve the problem

|||Unfortunately, it doesn't do the trick... in fact, it's like Manag. Studio is able to connect to the server (I can see the list of databases in advanced options) but it doesn't show the result afterwards. Could it be a security/account problem?

Thanks

M|||Hi again,
just another hint trying to understand what's going on.
I just spent a couple of hours removing both the server and the client components and install it again, but the problems remains. Does configuration survive removal? Or should I look somewhere else?

Thanks

Mauro
|||From Management Studio are u trying to connect using Windows authentication or SQL authentication?
|||Both actually. And the result is the same connecting to a local or remote machine, that's why I am quite curious about this error (that in fact makes development harder... )

Problem with valid owner

I have just downloaded the MS SQL Server Management Studio Express, and are following a tutorial on www.learnvisualstudio.net

Now I am having trouble with some owner information. The message says :

"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects"

I should mention that my WIN XP username is "Bj?rn" with the Norwegian letter "?" in the middle. I suspect it to have a problem with that letter?

Any better suggestions?

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=120849&SiteID=1

When the database does not have a valid owner, the database dialog displays the owner as the logged in user. (This issue will be fixed in SP1.)

The "no valid owner" issue usually comes up when databases are owned by SQL-authentication logins and are upgraded, detached/attached to another server, or restored from backup to another server. The SID (a large number) doesn't match any existing login on the new server, so the owner name remains whatever it was on the old server, but it is marked invalid. Explicitly setting the owner to a valid principal on the server solves the problem.

There is also a known issue when the UI tries to install the database support objects on databases where the compatibility level is set to 80 (SQL Server 2000). The installation fails and the UI incorrectly reports that the database has no valid owner. Setting compatibility level to 90 (SQL Server 2005) before installing the diagram support objects solves this problem. (This issue will also be fixed in SP1.)

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

The compatibility level was already set to 90, so that didn't solve the problem.

When I tried to set a new owner, I got this message:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

Set owner failed for Database 'MyCompany'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)

An entity of type database cannot be owned by a role, a group, an approle, or by principals mapped to certificates or asymmetric keys. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15353)
