Problems installing SQLServer 2000 Developer Edition on Windows XP Pro

Hello!

When trying to install SqlServer 2000 Developer (as Administrator) on my
Windows XP Professional I get the following message at the point where
the system asks Local Account or Domain account:

The logon account cannot be validated for the SQL server service. Verify
that the user name and password entered are correct. The logon attempt
failed.

Anyone an idea what goes wrong here?

Thanks for your info.

Daniel

Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!Make sure that the account you are providing has the "log on as
service" rights to local machine. After you verified that you didn't
make a typo entering the login. :-)

The system cannot open the device or file specified.
Internal error 2755. 110

I start with the following parametres:

Maybe the media you are installing from is corrupt or the file is missing?

|||Hi Jim,
I have just downloaded it from MS and unwrapped it to my harddsisk with the message that it was succesfully delivered. The file SqlRun01.msi is in the Setup directory.
I have uninstalled MS SQL Server 2000 and rebooted after.

Problems installing MSDE

When a double click setup.exe, I get the following message:

"SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine Setup

SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine cannot be installed on thiscomputer. This product requires Microsoft Windows NT Version 4.0 Service Pack 5or higher. Please download the service pack fromwww.microsoft.com prior to installing."

My machine is running Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4.
Anyone knows how to solve this problem?

Part of the problems installing MSDE is trying to install the service pack before SQL Server, try the link below and download the eval edition good for 120 days and the developer edition is $30 or less on the web . Hope this helps.
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/trial/default.mspx|||Thanks for your advice. I didn't write back earlier because I wanted to try our solution until I it was successful.
I tried what you suggested, but I was still getting the error message.I looked into the autorun.inf file. In it it had these lines
...
[servicepack]
NTVersion=4
...
I verified that I could run MSDE on my OS by reading the documentation.Then, I commented out the line, and the installation rancorrectly.

Problems inserting datetime object into sql server 2005

hey everyone,

Im trying run a stored procedure, but I am getting the following message when trying to execute it.

Implicit conversion from data type datetime to int is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.

which seems strange, as there is no integer going to a datetime field. Also, it does not return the value that is incorrect, nor the parameter that is failing. If there is anyway to view this in VS 2005 Team suite, please let me know.

It should also be noted that when I execute this sproc from within sql management studio, it executes fine.

This is the stored procedure im trying to execute...

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_UpdateRequest]

@.request_id INT,
@.request_client_id INT,
@.request_description VARCHAR(150), @.request_date DATETIME,
@.request_edit_date DATETIME, @.request_status VARCHAR(25), @.request_approve_date DATETIME,
@.request_activity_code VARCHAR(7), @.request_department_code VARCHAR(3), @.request_participants INT,

request_company_code = @.request_company_code, request_company_id = @.request_company_id,
request_notes = @.request_notes

WHERE request_id = @.request_id

END
GO

in my .net app, all the datetime objects are valid dates, so I could not see why this would be generating the error that it is, so I ran the SQL Profiler, and this was the output. Again, i cannot see where im going wrong...

please note, I have seperated the output from the single slab of text, making sure I didnt remove anything...

I'm not sure because it's already surrounded by single quotes.

Problems in selecting record.

I have a table A which has the following structure:
Column Name(Type)
-- --
ID(int)
Repair Code(varchar)
Damage Code(varchar)
Location Code (varchar)
I also have a the master code table
Column Name(Type)
-- --
Code Type (int)
Code Name (varchar)
Code Description ( varchar)
and have a stored procedure called GetCodeDescription which input the Code
Type and Code Name , display the Code Description found in the code master
table.
I want to select the record from TabelA by inputting a ID , then select the
record which have the follwong structure
Column Name(Type)
--
ID (int)
Repair Code (varchar)
Repair Code Description (varchar)
Damage Code (varchar)
Damage Code Description (varchar)
Location Code (varchar)
Location Code Description (varchar)
How can I do it by using the GetCodeDescription stored procedure?
Thnak you very much !Trying to use the stored procedure is only going to make things much,
much more complicated than necessary. How about just doing a query?

the|||Please post DDL, so that people do not have to guess what the keys,
constraints, Declarative Referential Integrity, data types, etc. in
your schema are. Sample data is also a good idea, along with clear
specifications. Your personal narrative and pseudo-code are useless.
That would be a horrible design error! Go back to the foundations; a
table is made up of one and only one kind of entity. There is no such
thing as "master code table" in a valid schema.
Next, a data element can be a type or a code but not a "type_code";
read ISO-11179. Next you confuse rows with records and columns with
fields and do not bother to give us table names.
Finally, how do you get enough codes into a VARCHAR(1) column? In a
good design, codes are fixed length and have a validation rule. There
is no such thing as a magical universal "id" in RDBMS; you are not
actually using IDENTITY in an RDBMS, are you'
I have to make a wild guess about the key
CREATE TABLE RepairRequests
(repair_nbr INTEGER NOT NULL,
repair_code INTEGER NOT NULL
REFERENCES Repairs (repair_code)
ON UPDATE CASCADE,
PRIMARY KEY (repair_nbr, repair_code),
damage_code INTEGER NOT NULL
REFERENCES Damages(damage_code)
ON UPDATE CASCADE,
location_code INTEGER NOT NULL
REFERENCES Locations (location_code)
ON UPDATE CASCADE);

(damage_code INTEGER NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
damage_description VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
.) ;
CREATE TABLE Locations
(location_code INTEGER NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
location_description VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
.) ;
I have no idea; where is the code for this stored procedure?
I see that you also do not understand what a repeated group is and how
to program in a tiered architecture. This should be done as a simple
query. But assuming that you really do hate RDBMS, how do you handle
a repair request with more or less than two damages on it?|||>Thank for the answer , but because my code table container about 12000
>records, if i join many times , i think the performance will be affected
If performance is bad the table is not indexed correctly. Also it is
not necessary to guess what performance will be, all you have to do is
run the queries in Query Analyzer to see what it is. Easy, quick, and
you can learn a lot.
Twelve thousand rows is really all that large, by the way. With
proper indexing performance should be fine with ten or a hundred times
as many rows.

Problems exporting to Excel

I am getting the following error message when I try to export to mulitple sheets (running 2000)

Excel Rendering Extension : Width of excel cell in the excel sheet exceeded the max limit of 1726.5 points.

If I take each the matrix out, it works ok. If I put the matrix back in, and take out the table it also works ok, it is only when I try to go both.

Does the matrix or table have a very wide column? Is there a large horizontal space between them? The Excel has to map the structures to cells in Excel. These cells have maximum widths that cannot be exceeded.

If you post your RDL, I might be able to offer more specific guidance.

Thanks, HerbHi
Ive got the same problem, but only on windows server 2003 using ssl. It runs
fine untill i install a ssl certificate, then it gives me a similar error. *.
ReportingServices.CustomSecurity* file not found.
If i reverse the ssl certificate, the problem remains. The same stuff works
fine on win xp with ssl though, and on win server 2003 without ssl. How did
you resolve this?

Problems deleting a column from SQL2000

Hello,
I'm trying to delete an existing varchar(10) column called "abc1" o in a
table on a SQL 2000 database and I'm getting the following error message in
Enterprise Manager.:
'web_cartOrders' table

I tried to delete it from SQL Analyzer directly from the server's console,
but I'm getting a similar error: "Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 1

I tried to rename, change data type and size of the data type of the column,
but still could not delete it.
Any thoughts?

Hi Vi,
You forgot to include the code you executed in query analyzer when you got
this error message.
Dropping the column abc1 from table myTable should be possible with the
following statement:
ALTER TABLE myTable
DROP COLUMN abc1
(untested)
Best, Hugo
--
(Remove _NO_ and _SPAM_ to get my e-mail address)|||The code is:
--
USE myDatabase
go
ALTER TABLE dbo.myTable DROP COLUMN abc1

Problems Creating a Full-Text Catalog

When I attempt to create a full-text catalog on a database, I receive the following error:

Create failed for FullTextCatalog 'AccountNotes'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

SQL server failed to communicate with Full-Text Service (msftesql). The system administrator must make sure that same service account is used for both services and the service account has the permission to auto start the full-text service. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 9955)

I have ensured that my SQL Server Service and the Full-Text service are running as the same account. I've had little luck finding an answer in the documentation.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Just checking to see if anyone had any suggestions. I'm still stuck where I was before.

I'm running SQL Developer Edition 2005.

Thank you.

Using the following commands i manage to connect to analysis services server at my pc

Server.srv=new Server ();

srv.Connect('ip address or name');

but not to another pc. Are there any settings under sql server should i change ?

I assume that you are using Analysis Services 2005.

First, make sure that the Analysis Services allows remote connections:

On the machine running analysis services, please perform the following steps:

- All programs\Microsoft SQL Server 2005\Configuration Tools\Sql Server Surface Area Configuration

- Click on the Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections

- Select Remote Connections under the MSSQLSERVER\Analysis Services node

- Make sure that Local and Remote connections is selected (to allow remote connections)

At this point, the client machine should be able to connect to the remote server. Before everything works, you will need to make sure that the client machine connection code is running under credentials that can access Analysis Services

|||

Well i have already enable remote connections and chech credentials as well

This is the error i am getting :

{"A connection cannot be made. Ensure that the server is running."} System.Exception {Microsoft.AnalysisServices.ConnectionException}

{"A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond"} System.Exception {System.Net.Sockets.SocketException}

Any help ? thanks.

|||That is unusual. Does PING work for the remote computer? Also, could you please check any firewall settings on the remote computer? Analysis Services (msmdsrv.exe) needs permissions through the firewall|||

PING works fine among the two ps's and analysis services is excepted under firewall .

I am still facing the same problem.

Can you please provide me the exact connection string from a pc1 with ip 10.181.11.1 to a pc2 with ip 10.181.11.2 (asp form in pc1 to analysis server in pc2)?

Maybe i use a wrong connection string

This is the error i am getting :

Unable to read data from the transport connection : an existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

Any help?

Thanks

|||

Are you using OLE DB or Adomd.Net?

The Connection String should look like "Data Source=10.181.11.2; Initial Catalog=<Your Database>"

One possible reason for the error is that your current user does not have permissions on the server. Are the computers in the same domain? If not, is Everyone allowed to access a database on the server?

|||

I am using ADOMD connection,,if you have an example connection string it would be helpful to check with the one i use

(i have tried different ways of setting the connection string but still cannot connect ).

As far as user credentials are concerned i have also tried to set them in different ways.

I am not quite sure which user (WinXP user, Database Engine User , IIS user, Analysis Services user) must have access to which place,, i am a bit confused about this.

I appreciate your help. Thank you

|||

To begin, let's make sure the physical connection works correctly. On the Analysis Services machine, create a new Analysis Services role which has permissions on your target database, and make sure that Everyone is a member of that role.

Then, try to connect from your client machine, using a connection string like

"Data Source=<IP of the remote machine>; Initial catalog=<name of the DB which is accessible to Everyone>"

If this works, the physical connection is OK and we'll focus on credentials.

Are your machines part of the same Windows NT domain? Tell me a few things about your application, I understand it is a web application, is it correct? Is it impersonating the remote user or running uner a set of specified credentials, or running under the default credentials (machine\ASPNET user)?

And, if you don't mind, could you please reply to this thread rather than creating a new post? It is easier to keep track of the issues

|||

We did what you suggested but we still get the same error.

Do we need to give the permissions and to the actual database (database engine) except to the one in analysis services ?

Our machines are part of the same workgroup connected via a router.

It is a web application and it is runnig under the default credentials.

But we tried with a windows application to check if we can connect to the analysis services and we still get the error

We can access a remote database engine througn sql server management studio but not remote analysis services server.

Is there a way to access a remote analysis services through sql server management studio?

Thanks

This reply involves another error (not the one mentioned above). It seems to have a problem in creating the DIMENSION through source code and the problem seems to be on 'Process' command. We removed the Process command from the code and tried to process it through anaysis services management studio and still got error 'process failed' . This is a critical issue ,,i cannot continue to create cubes, etc.

As far as my application is concerned ,,it is a web application ,,the user will choose through an asp form measures and dimensions and then dimensions,cubes,structures will be created dynamically. So the problem is at initial state since i cannot create the dimenions.

Pls help.

This is the source code i use for dimension creation :

static void CreateDateDimension(Database db)

{

// Create the Date dimension

Dimension dim = db.Dimensions.Add("Invitquest");

dim.Type = DimensionType.Time;

dim.UnknownMember = UnknownMemberBehavior.Hidden;

dim.AttributeAllMemberName = "All Periods";

dim.Source = new DataSourceViewBinding(datasourceName);

dim.StorageMode = DimensionStorageMode.Molap;

#region Create attributes

DimensionAttribute attr;

attr = dim.Attributes.Add("Invitquest");

attr.Usage = AttributeUsage.Key;

attr.Type = AttributeType.Date;

attr.OrderBy = OrderBy.Key;

attr.KeyColumns.Add(CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "invno"));

// attr.NameColumn = CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "tableid");

attr = dim.Attributes.Add("YPopto");

attr.Type = AttributeType.Regular;

attr.KeyColumns.Add(CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "Ypopto"));

// attr.NameColumn = CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "Ypopto");

attr = dim.Attributes.Add("cancer");

attr.Type = AttributeType.Regular;

attr.KeyColumns.Add(CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "CANCER"));

// attr.NameColumn = CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "CANCER");

attr = dim.Attributes.Add("AM BIO");

attr.Type = AttributeType.Regular;

attr.KeyColumns.Add(CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "AMBIO"));

// attr.NameColumn = CreateDataItem(db.DataSourceViews[0], "Invitquest", "AMBIO");

#endregion

dim.Update();

}

Thanks.

|||I merged all these threads.|||

> Our machines are part of the same workgroup connected via a router.

This seems to be the issue. Analysis Services uses exclusively Windows Integrated security. User accounts are not shared across machines in a workgroup, only in a domain (or related domains). This might explain both the management studio failure as well as the custom application failure.

Can you try allowing Everyone access to the Analysis Services database? Eventually , the permissions for the Everyone role can be restricted to what is needed (most likely, Read Definition and predictions), but you can start with Everyone as administrator -- not a great security suggestion, but it allows you to easily figure out if this is the source of the problem.

Problems configuring Execution Log Reports

I receive the following error:
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Get
Online Help
Cannot create a connection to data source 'RSExecutionLog'.
(rsErrorOpeningConnection) Get Online Help
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.
My ReportServer DB is separate from my ReportServer IIS boxes, I'm trying to
use Windows NT Integrated Security to access the Execution Log. I'm a Local
Admin of both servers but still receive the error.
Am I dealing with a permissions hop issue? Any suggestions would help.
DavidYes. Use stored credentials in the shared data source for the reports
(another slightly more complex option would be to use Kerberos delegation)

Problems after the install of the Hotfix

After installing SP1 and then the hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=918222

We now get the following error when trying to work with date parameters in Report Builder:

Query (6, 117) The '[VBA].[DateSerial]' function does not exist.
-
Semantic query execution failed.
-
Query execution failed for data set 'dataSet'.
-
An error has occurred during report processing.

Is this a known problem or is there some sort of something that I can reinstall?

Thanks!

Hi Louis, can you paste in RDL that fails?

thanks!

Sure thing. The problem comes with the prompted Transaction Date MDY. Without this parameter, it runs fine.

Thanks for the help :)

Any ideas? We are going to have to rebuild the server to avoid these issues really soon now (and I hate to be defeated :)

Sorry for delay, I am looking into this.

We've never seen this error message before. Do you have any other servers where this report runs? Did it run on pre-SP1 bits?

<Edit>

Ok, I can't figure what exactly happens, and can't repro it.
Could you please modify ReportServer Web.Config:
<add name="Components" value="all,RunningJobs:3,SemanticQueryEngine:4,SemanticModelGenerator:2" />

and rerun the report (repro the problem). Then take the latest ReportServer__timestamp.log and see if there are any interesting stack traces at the end of the file?

Thanks! :)

I am not rushing you because I didn't think you were checking into it. I thought you might not have any ideas and it was time to punt. If we do I will try adding the hotfix again after we reinstall sql server with SP1 just to see if it was the hotfix.

Yes, it did. They had a training class and there are quite a few of these reports from that class. So after I added the hotfix, we were testing things to see if they worked, and this was one of the few things that didn't. We are really pushing Report Builder to our clients to give them an ad hoc tool (for a great price :) but then we got this error.

I changed the setting, and it does show issues. I bolded what I thought were interesting. I should also note that our server is on the G: drive and not in C: (I didn't install it, and that person is gone now)

Basically we are taking a date dimension, then choosing the MDY Date format, choosing greater than, or something like that, right clicking the criteria and choosing Prompt. Then I run the report, click the date pick object, choose any date, and click run report. It starts to run then does this. To make sure it wasn't just upgraded reports, Tonight I took a dimension, chose two measures, and filtered like this on a date, same error.

Here is all of the trace stuff after it sets up the query, if you need more, feel free to ask. If you want to email me for quicker feedback, it is drsql@.hotmail.com, and I will be happy to talke by phone but I am not posting that here :)

Thanks for the help!

This looks like a problem in AS server which is being called by semantic query engine to execute the final (MDX) query. I will forward this to AS ppl for further analysis.
Thanks!

|||

Totally thanks for your help. I figured this was something wierd.

Do you think it will take long to get something started on correcting it? I can probably only leave the server in this state another day or two before the hounds attack and we reinstall :)

Louis

|||We looked at it and it seems like an installation glitch...|||

So is it repairable, or will we need to to a reinstall? And do I reinstall the hotfix? Or SP1? Or start over with RTM?

|||

If you insalled SQL server on disk C then there should be a folder like: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin, which contains the binaries for the AS server. That folder should contain msmdvbanet.dll.

The data folder (like C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Data) should contain folders like VBAMDX.0.asm and VBAMDXINTERNAL.0.asm. It should also contan files like VBAMDX.0.asm.xml and VBAMDXINTERNAL.0.asm.xml.

If something of the above is missing please let us know.

|||

I should mention that we are running on an instance named BI.

We didn't install it on C: (even though our norm is to install program files on c: and data on other drives ).

In c:\program files\microsoft sql server we only have: 80, 90

on G:\MSSQL\MSSQL.1\OLAP\bin

there is an msmdvbanet.dll

on H:\MSSQL$BI\AnalysisData\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Data

there is a VBAMDX.0.asm.xml file, and in it is a listing for:

G:\MSSQL$BI\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin\msmdvbanet.dll

There is a G:\MSSQL$BI\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services, but no MSSQL.2, or any other number (I understand the numbering well enough)

It appears that we had a quite non-standard setup and the hotfix didn't take that into consideration. Let me know if you want me to send you the contents of any files. I think we are going to rebuild soon.

|||

So you have 2 instances, which you can run - default and BI, right? Or just one (BI)?

When you run the named BI instance, is it configured to run from G:\MSSQL$BI\MSSQL.2\OLAP\bin ?

|||

Just one instance. And it was the only one installed (I am trying to force everyone to get used to working with instances).

Actually the service (Named MSOLAP$BI, SQL Server Analysis Services (BI)) is running:

G:\MSSQL\MSSQL.1\OLAP\bin\msmdsrv.exe -s "G:\MSSQL\MSSQL.1\OLAP\Config"

Or did you want something else?

|||

Please open msmdsrv.ini from G:\MSSQL\MSSQL.1\OLAP\Config

Does it contain the following line?

<UseVBANet>1</UseVBANet>
