Problems installing/accessing SQL server via web
I am doing some development for a client who has an IIS server running
webmail on the same box as the SQL server 2000 sp3 install. I am trying to connect to
this box but do not know how to set it up to connect. The IIS for SQL server
tool lets me add a virtual directory just fine but will not connect. This
problem is not firewall based, as the 1433 port is open, and the database is
running just fine, as those in the LAN can connect ok. My problem is with
the 'external' face and my concern that the running IIS process is
preventing web-based connection. How do I modify/change the IIS for SQL
virtual directory to respond?
If you need more information, please let me know.
Thanks,
Donald Wheeler
What error do you get when you attempt to connect?

Problems installing SQL 2000
I installed VS 2005 which automatically installed SQL 2005. I wanted to also install SQL 2000. I tried to install SQL 2000 (Client tools) after 2005 was installed and there were errors. I then uninstalled SQL 2005 and tried to install SQL 2000 (client tools). This is on my local machine not a server.
I am getting the following error:
"A connection could not be established to XXXX\SQLEXPRESS. Reason: SQL Server does not exist or access denied."
Is there something that I am missing?
Thanks in advance.
That sounds very confusing.
What is instaleld right now on that machine. If you installed SQl Server 2000 in a default instance and SQLExpress, I guess that SQL Express doesn′t have the default port number, so it should be another than the default one 1433. If you use the syntax of Servername\InstanceName,Portnumber you should get the access to the instances without any problem.

Problems in Creating Views in Sql
I have couple of Access databases needed to be
converted to access/Sql Client/Server database, which is new to me. I
am trying to convert my access quries to Sql Views or Stored
Procedures. I have run into a problem currently when creating view in
Sql:
I need to create some columns based on conditions of other columns,
for example:
1. Column example 1:
IIf([Column1]=-1,[ListPrice]*[Volume],IIf([Column2]=-1,0,[ListPrice]*Volume]))
2. Column example 2:
IIf(Len([Product].[P_No])<10,"",SUBSTRING([Product].[P_No],6,5))
3.Column example 3:
IIf([CustType]="D",([Field1]+[Field2])*[Volume],Field1*Volume)
The above are actually the columns that I need to create.
I have these functions built in Access Queries, but not sure how to
build them in Sql views. Have tried different ways, but failed.
Any body knows how to do it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Problems due to @@IDENTITY
connecting to SQL via ODBC.
The database has been in use since November 2003 and all has been working
well. However......over the past w

that, when new customer details were entered and the record was saved, the
displayed record would change to that of another although the new record had
been saved to the table.
At first I thought it was Access playing around (bless it) but have since
discovered the true cause. Whenever a new customer is entered, a SQL
trigger fires that will also create a dummy record in another table
(tbl_MainCaseEntry) ready for the user to enter details. There is an
essential reason for the trigger but it is too long winded to explain why.
The trigger reads:
CREATE TRIGGER trg_NewCustomer
ON tbl_Customer
FOR INSERT
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @.CustID INT, @.CaseCount INT
SET @.CustID = (SELECT CustomerID FROM Inserted)
INSERT INTO tbl_MainCaseEntry (CustomerID) VALUES(@.CustID)
END
The field CustomerID in tbl_MainCaseEntry is the foreign key with the table
having it's own primary key of MainID (set as an identity field seeded
(1,1)).
I have since discovered via the Query Analyser that @.@.IDENTITY is pulling
back the last identity field for the entire statement (in this case the
MainID in tbl_MainCaseEntry for the new record created by the trigger).
Is there any way that I can stop this from happening by using
IDENT_CURRENT('tbl_Customer') and making sure that @.@.IDENTITY is forced back
to this value? I have tried to use SET @.@.IDENTITY =
IDENT_CURRENT('tbl_Customer') but this does not work.
Any advice would be appreciated as this is driving me mad!!
Regards
DazzaUse SCOPE_IDENTITY, not @.@.IDENTITY. This side effect is well documented.
Please post DDL, sample data and desired results.

the syntax please?
All BOL seems to show is that it will display the identity of the table
where the focus starts (ie tbl_Customer) by using SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY() AS
[SCOPE_IDENTITY].

But if you want the calling code to return the identity value generated by
its INSERT statement (not the INSERT in the trigger), use SCOPE_IDENTITY()
in the calling code. http://www.aspfaq.com/2174

I guess you assume that inserts always happen in singleton? You need this
code to be multi-row aware. For example, watch what happens when you do
this:
INSERT Customers(col1, ..., colN)
SELECT 'col1', ..., colN
UNION
SELECT 'col1', ..., colN
To correct this, your INSERT statement inside the trigger should simply be:
INSERT tbl_MainCaseEntry (CustomerID)
SELECT CustomerID FROM Inserted
Or, change the calling stored procedure to handle the logging part of this,
and eliminate the need for a trigger at all. You do control access to this
table via stored procedures, right?
In any case, the calling app can't expect to get back a single @.@.IDENTITY or
SCOPE_IDENTITY() in the multi-row insert case.
(I also think you should consider dropping the superfluous tbl_ prefix, but
that's just an opinion.)
Please post DDL, sample data and desired results.

Many thanks for the advice.
I do not use SPs for the entry or retrieval of the data in forms as the
front-end uses linked tables. I have been working with SQL Server for about
a year (mostly admin) and still have a lot to learn regards development
methods for front-end access clients. The database in question is my first
real production development project but there are more to come I have been
told !!

Problems connecting to MSDE from client.
We have installed our SW on a network with 8 clients. I runs fine on all but
1 client. This client is running Win 2000 and has 3 network cards installed
to be shared by 3 networks.
We use SQL auth. I have run CLICONFG on the client and enabled Names pipes
and TCP as they are on the server with the same port nr.. Our SW loads
correctly from the server so there is connection. I have also pinged the
server.

We have a new install of SQL 2005 SP1 configured with a Navision
database restored and all client tests show no issues at moment. I am
able to connect remotely via SSMS (Management Studio) from my
workstation via TCP/IP. Also installed is Integration Services. I am
able connect to the service remotely to view the Stored Packages in the
File System but unable to view the MSDB contents. The error is below:
->Login timeout expired
An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failue may be caused by the
fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections.
TCP Provider: No connection could be made because the target machine
actively refused it. (Microsoft SQL Native Client)
No firewall exists on this server. Does anyone have insight to this
issue?
Thanks,
Ian
Update: Reviewing the Surface Area Configuration shows that Local and
remote connections are enabled for both TCP/IP and Named Pipes.
Connection via Named Pipes produced the similar error below:
->Login timeout expired
An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failue may be caused by the
fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections.
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
(Microsoft SQL Native Client)

Problems calling an SP with SQL Server ( EXECUTE permission denied )
I'm trying to test an SP with SQL Query Analyser from my client db an
it gives me this error :
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]EXECUTE permission
denied on object 'sp_sdidebug', database 'master', owner 'dbo'.
I'm using Microsoft SQL SE SP4 and i'm new to it. I read on gg forums
that you have to execute sp_sdidebug with the 'legacy_on' parameter and
you need EXECUTE permission on sp_sdidebug. How do you do that !
Need help ! Thanks !
Olivier
To grant permission, you can use:
GRANT EXECUTE ON sp_sdidebug TO <YourUser>
To enable it for legacy clients, use:
EXEC sp_sdidebug 'legacy_on'
-Sue

Problem written with few words... come and read
with the Network client utility
Computer name : SCG59730
Instance name : Mercure
Alias : MyProject
When I try to register this new server (MyProject\Mercure)
SQL Server doesn't find the serverI think you should simply register with the alias alone:
MyProject
not MyProject\Mercure
.. although I have not used it very much.|||In fact I wanted to create an Alias
to avoid using the Machine Name in the connection string
but I FINALLY found the of creating my local server in
the Enterprise Manager
the name of the server must be
(LOCAL)\INSTANCENAME
thanks anyway

problem with xsd and doulbe nested tags
the <LIST> tag at the same level as the new tags. I need the ADDRESS info to end up in an ADDRESS table, with the PERSONID populated. The tags appear as:
<LIST><PERSONID>12345</PERSONID><ADDITIONAL ADDRESS><ADDRESS><ADDRESS_TYPE>Home</ADDRESS_TYPE><STREET>123 Main </STREET><CITY>Montreal</CITY></ADDRESS><ADDRESS><ADDRESS_TYPE>Business</ADDRESS_TYPE><STREET>695 Fuller Ave</STREET><CITY>Montreal</CITY></ADDR
ESS><ADDITIONAL ADDRESS></LIST>
Tables:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[LIST] (
[personid] [int] NULL ,
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[ADDRESS] (
[personid] [int] NULL ,
[address_type] [char] (6) NULL,
[street] [char] (60) NULL ,
[city] [char] (50) NULL ,
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
I tried the following schema, did not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
<xsd:schema xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
xmlns:msdata="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-msdata"
xmlns:sql="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:mapping-schema"><xsd:annotation><xsd:appinfo><sql:relation ship name="LIST_ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS" parent="LIST" parent-key="personid" child="ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS" child-key="personid"/><sql:relationship name="LIST_ADDITIONA
L_ADDRESS_ADDRESS" parent="LIST_ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS" parent-key="personid" child="ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS_ADDRESS" child-key="personid"/></xsd:appinfo></xsd:annotation><xsd:element name="LIST" sql:relation="LIST"><xsd:complexType><xsd:sequence ><xsd:element name
="personid" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" sql:field="personid"/><xsd:element name="LIST_ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded" sql:relation="ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS" sql:relationship="LIST_ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS"><xsd:co mplextType><xsd:sequence>
<xsd:element name="ADDRESS" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded" sql:relation="ADDRESS" sql:relationship="LIST_ADDITIONAL_ADDRESS_ADDRESS" ><xsd:complexType><xsd:sequence><xsd:element name="address_type" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" sql:field="address_ty
pe"/><xsd:element name="street" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" sql:field="street"/><xsd:element name="city" type="xsd:string" minOccurs="0" sql:field="city"/></xsd:sequence></xsd:complexType></xsd:element></xsd:sequence><xsd:complextType><xsd:element></x
sd:sequence></xsd:complexType></element></xsd:schema>
Couple of things:
- I think you have an error at the end of your schema. You want to close
the complexType and element tags, not open new ones.
- I assume the "LIST_ADDITIONAL_ADDRESSES you refer to as the child in your
second relationship is the name of the first relatiionship? That doesn't
work. This can only refer to a table name.
- If all they did is add a wrapper element, can you use sql:is-constant?
