Problems installing MSDE with the Server Service disabled
We are having problems installing our desktop Application at a
customer's site where the policy is to disable the Server Service.
Being a desktop configuration, our installation places MSDE on the
same PC as the rest of the application. Unfortunately the
installation will not succeed unless the Server Service is enabled.
Interestingly, we can disable the Server Service after installation
and the Application will still function normally. However, enabling
the Server Service --even just during installation-- would violate our
customer's network policy.
It is my understanding that Server Service is not required if your
references are confined to the local system. Therefore my question is
: Is there a way to install MSDE or Standard Edition on the local
system when the Server Service is disabled?
Thanks in advance for any feedback,

Problems instaling IIS & Notification Service
I am trying to install SQL server 2005 Developer Edition on a stand alone PC running XP (service pack 2). I have the below error messages preventing me installing Notification Services and Intergration Services ( looks like the same problem for both ). I followed the advice to check the 'Distributed TransactionCoordinator' in services, all setting were correct. I stopped amd restarted the service and selected "retry' to no avail. Any ideas anyone?

You can find x86 vesrion of .NET 2.0 redistributable at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en
The page also contains links to x64 and ia64 versions at the bottom.

Problems configuring Reporting Service (Express Edt.)
First: The problems have their orinin in ExpressEdt.Installation of RS. The DefaultInstallation did not SetUp the ReportingServices, just installed the files. So I had to configure the ReportingServices on my own. I used the "Reporting Services Configuration Manager".
Now I've got some problems configuring the reporting services. First problems are the virtual directories.
I've tried some different users for authentification. I used a local user with lower rights, an admin-user, Network Service and IUSR_MachineName for directory security. Tried to use WindowsAuthentification and AnonymousAcces.
The AppPool-Identity runs with NeworkService rights.
When I browse the page i get an "You are not authorized to view this page..."-error.
The mentioned users have rights on the local folders and are in IIS_WPG-Group.
Whats the problem here?
Second thing I have to tell is that in "RS Config Manager" the "Initialization"-tab has a (X), so i cant get into this program-part.
Please help me....
tobiHello There.
I found out the problem is caused by the website where the virtual directories are in.
For
publishing the website I put an IP-adress in and made some host
header-entries. After deleting the host headers ReportManager und
ReportServer are working fine.
Whats the problem using RS and HostHeaders?
How do I config them right?
I get the error: "HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials"
Credentials AppPool: "Network Service"
Credential WebSite: Windows Auth.
Credential VirtDirect.: Windows Auth.
As Credential i us a local user. This user is in Adminstrator group.
Thanks in advance, Tobi

Problems communicating across services.
Hello,
I am writting two applications that talk to each other. I create a service and then a dialog that points to Client2Service which means it is talking to it self. When I do that it works because I get pack the string "client1" which I am forcing it to send if it is calling ServiceProc in client1. I cahnge the Client2Service to Client1Service and it does not work any more. I do not understand why but am guessing it has something to do with the way I have the database setup. The installation script is bellow. Please share your thoughts because I am running out of ideas.

How are you beginning the dialog and sending the message? Did you try to diagnose the problem by looking at (i.e. simply doing a select * from...):
1. the initiator queue
2. the target quueue
3. sys.transmission_queue
|||Hello Rushi,
I tried
select * from sys.dm_broker_activated_tasks
select * from sys.transmission_queue
and they both returned nothing. The code to send it bellow.
try
{
// Create a connection
conn = new SqlConnection(
"Initial Catalog=ssb_FloorSystem; Data Source=localhost;Integrated Security=SSPI;");
// Open the connection
conn.Open();
// Begin a transaction
tran = conn.BeginTransaction();
// Create a service object
client = new Service("HelloWorldClient", conn, tran);
// Set the FetchSize to 1 since we will receive one message at a time
// i.e. use RECEIVE TOP(1)
client.FetchSize = 1;
// Begin a dialog with the HelloWorld service
dialog = client.BeginDialog(
"Client1Service",
null,
"MessageTalk",
TimeSpan.FromMinutes(1),
false,
conn,
tran);
// Create an empty request message
MemoryStream body = new MemoryStream(Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(Msg));
Message request = new Message("Request", body);
// Send the message to the service
dialog.Send(request, conn, tran);
tran.Commit(); // Message isn't sent until transaction has been committed
}

{
tran.Rollback();
}

public string GetMessage(SqlConnection conn, Conversation dialog, Service client, SqlTransaction tran)

Problems after service window
This is unbelevable.. I've been struggeling a bit with getting distributed transactions to work, but yesterday I finally got it all working.
A couple of hours later (yesterday evening) there was a service window in the organisation and a couple of hotfixes etc was installed in the server (Win2k3).
This morning when I tried to launch the job (an SSIS package) I get the error message "Unable to load package". If I run the package as a cmd program I get a permission denied error. The package is stored in SSIS package store (MSDB\...\). I have added the account running the job-step in the local administrators group and also made it sys_admin of the SQL-database, but with the same result (package could not be loaded).
I have also tried to import the package again since I thought it might have been corrupted, but no success.
Any idas?
I would find out what those hotfixes were, what they do, and what problems they were meant to solve.

It was
KB922616 - Security problem in HTML
KB917344 - Security problem in JScript
KB921398 - Windows explorer problem
I can't see any of them should affect this... I don't think they were ment to solve any spesific problem(s). I guess more or less all security patches for the servers are installed here (I'm not responsible for the server patching).
However, I'm not so sure the hotfixes are responsible. Perhaps the reboot triggered something, some policy, some settings that were changed but didn't take effect until the reboot or whatever...
Guess I could try to remove the patches and see if it helps.
