Problems installing SQLServer 2000 Developer Edition on Windows XP Pro

Hello!

When trying to install SqlServer 2000 Developer (as Administrator) on my
Windows XP Professional I get the following message at the point where
the system asks Local Account or Domain account:

The logon account cannot be validated for the SQL server service. Verify
that the user name and password entered are correct. The logon attempt
failed.

Anyone an idea what goes wrong here?

Problems installing SQL7 Desktop on WinXP

I am having great difficulty installing SQL Server 7 Desktop Edition onto WinXP

Pro. The installation proceeds without error until an attempt is made to
configure and then connect to SQL Server, at which point the installation fails and all installed components are removed from the PC. I have tried to install on repeated occasions, always with the same result.

I would be very grateful for any help in solving this problem.

I have already downloaded MDAC 2.7 but the install still fails.

It's probably not relevant but if I run Component Checker against version "2.7 SP1(WinXP)" the utility reports the following anomalies:

Note that if the user already has .NET Framework on their machine, they're going to have to go back to an earlier version, do the SQL Uninstall, then go forward to the RTM version.

Please look at the %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup

3/ Uninstall the current .NET Frameworks 2.0
4/ Run the old setup.exe up until it starts asking you what you want to install
(let it install SNAC and .NET), then exit setup.
5/ (**Skip this step for: SNAC, SQL Support Files and .NET Frameworks 2.0) run "msiexec /x {ProductGUID} /l*v c:\logfile.txt" for each of the ProductGUIDs listed in your Core log file from above.

Assuming that succeeds,

Problems installing Reporting Services

Hi Folks,

I want to download Reporting Services for SQL Server Express Edition but I can't find it.

It seems to be in Analysis Services but when I run SQLEXPR_ADV.EXE I don't find any mention of Reporting Services.

I get to the final options choice which offers me 'Database Services' and 'Client Components' but neither of these mentions Reporting Services.

I have installed BI Studio successfully.

I'd be grateful for any and all suggestions.

You obtain "Reporting Services", you have to download and install SQL Server Express Advanced Services.

first verify IIS has been properly installed on the hosting computer ()...

uncheck "Hide advanced configuration options" setting..

in the "Feature selection" dialog task wizard, include "Reporting services"

after the "installation whistles" I got
"Reporting Services
The Reporting Services installation options you specified in Setup determine whether further configuration is required before you can access the report server. If you installed the default configuration, the report server can be used immediately. If you installed just the program files, you must run the Reporting Services Configuration tool to deploy the report server."

and it has been properly installed...

where did you find problems?

Yes, by referring to the three books I recently bought on SQL Server 2005 Express.

One of the obscure problems was that SSE defaults to preventing remote access, which I needed.

Problems installing Client tools and BOL

I have tried several times to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on a cluster. SQL Server, SQL browser and SQL Agent installs ok but when the installer start to setup Books on line and client tools (BIDS) and SS Management Studio the installer stops and end the installation.

Problems instaling IIS & Notification Service

I am trying to install SQL server 2005 Developer Edition on a stand alone PC running XP (service pack 2). I have the below error messages preventing me installing Notification Services and Intergration Services ( looks like the same problem for both ). I followed the advice to check the 'Distributed TransactionCoordinator' in services, all setting were correct. I stopped amd restarted the service and selected "retry' to no avail. Any ideas anyone?

can you try to reinstall .NET Framework 2.0 and then try the setup again?

I downloaded .net 2.0 as suggested, and selected repair. Service loaded fine afterwards

problems in installing sql server 2000 standard edition

When i install sql server 2000 i have a message
" Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition Server Component is not supported on this operating system only client components will be available for installation"

Hence I cannot install properly. I installed only the client componets. Thereafter when I went through Enterprise Manager and tried to establish a connection, I failed. It said server does not exist.

What to do now?

I found out that if one has sql server 2000 standard editon the prerequisties are
Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or later, Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 5 or later, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Windows 2000 Datacenter Server.

I have windows xp professional version on which i am installing sql server standard edition.
Which of the above exists in my OS. Or which should I download.

You can only install SQL Server full editions (such as Standard, Enterprise, etc) on "server" OSes, such as those listed in your original message. On "client" OSes such as XP, you can only install the client tools to connect to other server machines. Thus in order to install SQL 2000, you will need Windows 2000, 2003, or Vista. Same story with SQL 2005.

I was so glad to get SQL Server Standard Edition that I forgot to remove the .Net Framework last. I almost removed all SQl Server files. I tried to remove the remaining files dealing with SQl Server(including add/remove programs) but I can't remove them all. I tried to go to the page to use the unstall tool for SQl Server 2005 but I get is the following:

You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.

I have installed MSDE 2000 SP3a on Windows 2003 Server Web edition.
I am trying to connect to this DB using enterprise manager from another
machine (Windows 2000 Server where SQL Server is installed) with no luck. I
am getting: SQL Server does not exist or access is denied. ConnectionOpen
(Connect())".
I have tried connecting using both Windows Authentication mode and using the
sa account (which I am not sure I know the password for the MSDE).
Can anyone help ?

Problems connecting to local SQL server [HELP!]

Hi all,

I have the developer edition of Visual Studio 2005. After successfully installing it in my local machine, I wanted to create a small application which connects to a database. I accessed the Server Explorer tool, right clicked on Data Connections and brought up the Create New SQL Server Database option.

The issue now is that I don't see a list of servers in the "Server Name" drop down box although in the Server Explorer itself, I have a server listed (your-c6b5e4eabc - The default computer name of my local machine).

I am given to believe that SQL server is unable to make a connection because I have not configured something which is essential.

I hope someone can point me as to how to make databases using SQL server and connect them to the application the way developers usually do. I'm a complete novice to VS 2005, and the SQL server configuration options have got me confused.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I'll include this here anyway :

When I tried copying and pasting the server name (your-c6b5e4eabc) into the "Server Name" drop down box and creating a database by entering a name in the "Enter database name" textbox, I get the following error message -

An error occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings, SQL server does not allow remote connections. provider : Named Pipes Provider error : 40 Error : Could not open a connection to SQL Server.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition v2002 SP 2.

I just want to be able to create and work with databases from within the applications I create in Visual Studio 2005. I played around with the configuration options (like enabling some protocols, the SQL server browser etc., but to no avail.) Is there a way to revert back to the default settings in an easy way? Thanks in advance for all your guidance...

Thanks very much for your screencast link. I think we should have more such user-friendly guides for first timers to Visual Studio. Unfortunately, I'm still facing the same problem creating a database from the Server Explorer.

I also have a rider question here : Although I've made a typical installation of Visual Studio 2005, the service I seem to be running isn't MSSQLSERVER, but rather SQLEXPRESS. I really need someone to throw more light on this aspect of Visual Studio 2005...or is my case an aberration?

Also, I mentioned playing around with the settings of the SQL Server 2005 Configuration Manager...can that be affecting things in any way? What are the ideal settings to connect to the server from within the server explorer in VS 2005? Most notably, I've set the SQL Server 2005 Services (SQLExoress and SQLBrowser) to log on as "NT Authority/LocalService"...is this the right setting?

SQL Server Express comes with VS 2005, you can use SQL Server Express at no charge. The SQL Server instances are reflected in the Service names, which are for a default instance MSSQLSERVER and for named Instances MSSQL$InstanceName. Named instances can be accessed by using the MachineName\InstanceName (and in addition if you don′t use the default port the ",portnumber" addition to the) name.

2.
Sure, changing the configuration will affect the current SQL Server instance (some changes might be reflected after the next reboot, like the remote connections setting). Local Services is fine if you don′t need any network ressources.

Problems adding MS access datasource in VB studios 2005 enterprise

I am running Visual Studios 2005 enterprise edition and I am creating a mobile application to keep track of some receipts. The problem I'm currently having is that even though I can connect to the MS Access Database with Server Explorer that I'll be aquiring data from; Everytime I attempt to use the Data Configuration Wizard to add a new data source that namely the database I get this error message:

The new connection uses a data provider that is not supported. (end of message)

There is no username or password necessary to access this database and it is an Access 2003 database.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to make sure...

You did change the Data Source to:

Microsoft Access Database File (OLE DB)

Which will use the following .NET Data Provider:

.NET Framework Data Provider for OLE DB

I assume you did in order to select the database, but I just want to make sure.

And when you click the button "Test Connection", it gives you that error?

Well that is the default settings so I just left those as they were and once I had figured out how to connect to the database thru server explorer, whenever I hit the test connection it said Connection ok. However the error message pops up when I attempt to add the database thru the add new datasource wizard.

I have no idea sir, I started the project as a smart device app, and in all the walkthroughs I have viewed nothing has been said about the Jet database engine being incompatible with mobile devices. If this is the case I'd like to know because this project is currently dependent on VS being able to connect with our Access database.

It's certainly possible to develop a mobile web app that talks to a JET database on the server, but if you need a local data store on the mobile device that will remain available when the device is not connected to the network, then you will not be able to use JET. Your alternatives - as I understand it - include SQL Server CE and XML. There is a database engine on the Pocket PC called 'Pocket Access' but it has very little to do with the desktop product, and there is no built-in support for 'Pocket Access' in the .NET framework. There is, however, a third-party component you could look at. There's an article on this at the URL below, and there's a link from the article to the vendor of the third-party component. Note that I haven't personally used this, and I don't know what plans, if any, Microsoft has to continue to support 'Pocket Access'. If I were to make an intermediate SQL database to function as the go between for a SQL Mobile database and a Microsoft access database, is such a solution even possible? Our organization recently purchased VS 2005 on the assumption that it would be easy to use the .NET framework to develop a mobile app that would easily transfer data to an access database. Now with this new information its quite possible the data will go SQL Mobile -> SQL Database -> MS Access database.

The SQL Database would just function as a temporary store to check data generated from receipts made in the mobile database. Once the checks are done the corrected data would be passed to the MS Access database. Then the SQL database would wipe itself clean.

Yes, but it makes no sense. To accomplish that you would have to purchase SQL 2000/2005 and pay CALs per device (or per CPU license). If that’s acceptable, simply get rid of Access and use much more powerful SQL you've paid for.

Alternative solution is to use Web Service to talk to Access database. Create couple WEB methods to talk to access and call them from device. Something like this should do:

DataSet GetAccessData(String command, …)

{

// Connect to Access DB here, execute command and populate data set with returned data.

return dataSet;

}

Bool UpdateAccessData(DataSet dataSet, … )

{

// Connect to Access DB here and update DB with data from Data Set.

return success;

The enterprise edition that we purchased of VBS 2005 came with SQL server 2005 and I just installed it upon learning that I can't communicate directly with the Access database. I'm not sure if we still have to pay the CALS per device though.
If I used these web service methods where would I write them? In the upload and download portion of the code for the mobile app?

I believe it comes with 5 CALs (to be verified).

These WS methods would run on desktop via IIS which would host WS. To create them, please click ‘Create/Web Site’ and choose "ASP.Net Web Service". You'll get project skeleton, simply add code you need and run it. Decorate added methods with WebMethod attribute. This is desktop project, so you could use anything desktop has to offer.

Calling WS from device pretty much looks like a normal function call. All necessary code would be created for you automatically as soon as you add Web Reference to your project.

while the .NET Compact Framework has no APIs to leverage Access databases, there is an open source set of APIs that support Access at www.opennetcf.org

there are also some commercial libraries available - use Google Advanced Groups search on microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.compactframework and look for "Access Database"

Problems (re)installing SQL Server 2005 in WinXP pro

I am attempting to install the Standard edition on a WinXP pro laptop that apparently had this installed before I got it. I Removed, thru Add/Remove, everything related to SQL Server. When I tried to do a fresh install of DB Services, Integration Services and Client tools, Setup Support and the Native Client seems to install ok, the directories get created and some files are put there. The installer stops and sez that the Databases Services and the Workstation Components are already installed, the Details button tells me that the only available option are thru the Add/Remove Programs. There are no entries for the Server or Client Tools on Add/Remove's list.

When I try to start the server it fails with "can't find the Path" reported in an Error Event, likewise I can't start the Management Studio because it can't find a file.

I think that I need to clean everything out to reinstall. I think that the Services are left over from the previous owner. Any suggestions?

Problem with Visual Studio 2005 pro + SQLserver 2005 developer

Im pretty new to development so.... be nice guys.

I have VS2005 pro and SQL Server 2005 developer edition installed. When I open VS, in the server explorer i can connet to databases located on the SQL directory (SQL Server runs perfectly) But when i try to add an sql server to my project( add new item --> SQL database) it gives me an error saying "Connection to SQL server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component....."

HELP! donno what VS wants!

It seems that Visual Studio has inbuilt support only for Express edition of SQL Server 2005.
